"God is a Verb" and Other Truths from "The Shack" -- A Book Review by H.P. Atilano

[Author's Note: This article was first published on Facebook last July 21, 2011.]

I'm writing about a book I finished reading tonight, not as a critic or a literature buff, but as a lost child of God who has found her way back home. So, this will be more of a testimony than a critical essay on a work of fiction. I ought to caution you that if full disclosures of profound spiritual experiences is not your cup of tea, this will be a tedious, boring read. So, you may, as you see fit, leave this page, fully exonerated.

The instant I opened "The Shack," I knew it was written for people like me: lost souls in a spiritual desert. By the time I closed it, I was "home," my thirst for spiritual enlightenment fully quenched. And now that I've written it down, a new flash of insight, another epiphany: reading "The Shack" is symbolically entering this proverbial shack in the story, where the reader gets a vivid glimpse into the nature of the mysterious God compressed in 250 pages of fictional prose. I'm talking of The God that theologians and religious scholars spend 10 or 20 years studying about and yet do not fully grasp, let alone genuinely love. This is the same God you will grow to "truly" love, albeit not fully grasp, after reading "The Shack."

"The Shack" is a novel by William Paul Young, "a Canadian raised by missionary parents among a stone-age tribe in the highlands of New Guinea," so goes his brief biosketch. This much I knew about the author. But after reading his novel, I could tell he, too, was lost and found, broken and healed, blinded and enlightened. Reading him was a pilgrimage in print, a very enlightening crash course in theology, if we define "theology" as the study of God. Having said these about the author, I'm inclined to believe that he is an angel, if, by definition, "angel" means God's messenger. I believe, too, that it was no accident that the owner of this book, Miss Tessa Gonzales Yulo, is in my Literary Criticism class this semester and had the good heart to lend me the book. She, too, is an angel.

I will not go into a semi-detailed synopsis of the novel and spare you the agony of a verbose retelling. After all, it is your "obligation" to find out what this novel is about. You owe this to your self. My role here is just to lead you to "the shack," the way the protagonist, Mackenzie, was led to it by a cryptic note he found in his mailbox, signed by God Himself. I daresay, not many writers who could treat such a delicate subject matter as the nature of God the way he did would get away with it unscathed by both religious and literary critics. But Young pulled it off gracefully and brilliantly till page 250.

I mean, what author-- even of prose fiction-- would depict the Almighty Creator of the Universe as a corpulent African-American woman who speaks like Maya Angelou? The Heavenly Father appears in this novel as you would imagine Oprah in apron, covered in flour and reeking of oyster sauce. Jesus Christ is a Middle Eastern-looking guy in laborer's clothes who laughs a lot, eats a lot, and skips stones over the lake when he's not walking on it. The Holy Ghost is a lady gardener with strong oriental features dressed in plain jeans and brightly colored blouse.

But before you cry "blasphemy!" and judge this book as the myopic critics did, read it and see for yourself, as cleverly told in a compelling narrative by an enlightened author, the following Bible truths:

* God is a verb, not a noun, as Love is;
* God did not create evil and sufferings; we did, a long time ago in a Garden far away;
* God DOES NOT believe in religion; He believes in Relationship;
* Jesus is NOT a Christian (and he said this himself somewhere in the story);
* We were created by Love, because of Love, and for Love and the ONLY way to live is to LIVE LOVED...

This, and more earth-shattering, life-changing revelations about God's innermost thoughts and sentiments exposed as if God were flesh and blood.

I've dealt with Dante Alighieri and his Divine Comedy, but this medieval guy is sometimes too inaccessible for a Gen-Xer like me. William Paul Young is the Dante of this age, and I'm saying this with the conviction of a soul redeemed from her self-inflicted perdition.

There's one person in my life right now that I couldn't bring myself to forgive. Many times-- and secretly, of course-- I wished this person would die a most painful death. This person broke my soul. And it took a book to COMPLETELY heal me from this brokenness. "The Shack" is my catharsis. I was in there with the protagonist, confronting my own monster, my shadow beast, my id. As God was showing the protagonist how to forgive the man who brutally murdered her 6 1/2-year-old daughter, I was being shown how to kill my already-wounded ego. And, I'm telling you, the pain was so excruciating I had to close the book and weep. I have forgiven, in my heart and in my soul, the person who "killed" me.

Enter "The Shack." Let go. Let God.#

  1. While rummaging the shelves of Fully Booked last year, I came across this book but did not mind it much that time. Later on, I realized (through my ENglish teacher) that I should not have just taken this book slightly. Based on this review, I could feel that this novel is moving, life-transforming, even. We humans tend to commit mistakes but find it hard to forgive, therefore, the theme of this contemporary work of art is something that we could strongly relate to. At this time, people tend to get skeptical, doubting themselves, especially God. This book, I believe, will remind us that God is there (in fact, He is everywhere), waiting for us to acknowledge His unfailing presence which we cannot feel most of the time. I myself am looking forward to read this book, and discover what God has to say, through W. P. Young's words. "We were created by Love, because of Love, and for Love and the ONLY way to live is to LIVE LOVED..."

  3. I must admit that I am not a reader of books, but this is one of the things that I need to work on, discovering my love for books as a way to find the parts of my own self which I feel is still lost. After reading this review, it made me want to read this book if given a chance and a copy of this book. I am really sure that it might quench my spiritual thirst and longing for the Lord. Yes, I am a Christian. I do believe in God. I love the Lord our Savior. But I know deep within my heart that there is something still missing. And I do hope that maybe after reading this book, this book might serve as a bridge to get to the completion of my spiritual quench for God. As I would quote W.P Young's words also, "We were created by Love, because of Love, and for Love and the ONLY way to live is to LIVE LOVED...", this book review made me realize that I may have missed a lot of learning because of not reading books. I am really hoping I do get a copy of this.

  4. After reading the book review of "The shack", I found myself hanging and trying to search it in the internet. The story really moved me because this story is kind of new for some reason that since i was in high school, yeah really I'm into reading but i was not used to read that kind of story. Reading Nicholas Sparks stories was very romantic and it makes me fall in love with certain people whom i did not know that's why he was my inspiration in reading I tend to read and read nothing, only his books. But now seems I found a new reading material which is very very very new to me and very unusual to read. I know I'm gonna love this book and i know that it will teach me lessons which i cannot learn in the galaxies nor in the solar system. Reading can be very boring but learning through books will actually transform you into something different, something new of how you think book was.....now i commented here not just a reason that this is a requirement but also a reason that we have to read books because if we stop reading, we also stop learning and as what miss Atilano said out there in the book review that: We were created by Love, because of Love, and for Love and the ONLY way to live is to LIVE LOVED and that what also books wanted from us is to love and be loved...Books are not created for library only, it is created for our mind to think and heart to feel. Now I'm thinking to read it, wait i will search it again in the internet. Bye, God bless every one :D

    1. Mark, I like what you said about books not just for the library. That's very true. I will share with you and Gelo a PDF copy of The Shack, if you're really interested.

  5. Well, I also admit that I am not fond of reading books because I got bored easily and I'm too lazy to read, but I want to change my attitude towards reading. Many of my teachers said that "If you stop READING, you stop LEARNING." After hearing this message, realization struck me because the were right. The only way to change attitude is to force myself to read and through the help of my friend, I am changing little by little. I am currently reading the book "Red Dragon" by Thomas Harris and I promised to myself that I will read this until the last chapter of this book and I'm too excited to finish reading it because of this review that I've read. I think that this is the book that I am looking for. A book that can help me know more about God and my self. I also felt that there's a missing part of my life just like Angelo. They say that I am very much lucky that I have everything, I can eat three times a day, I can buy new clothes or shoes that I want, I'm enrolled to a prestigious school in our town and I have a family that truly loves me. Yes I do apprecite these things in my life, but through these things I sometimes forget to thank God that he gave me such a wonderful blessings. I really want to read this book because I know that it will help me build stronger my relationship to God and also understands the meaning of life. The reason why I told this little secret of mine because I want to be honest here to all of you because we are FAMILY and the member of each family do LOVE each other. GOD BLESS :)

    1. Steff, thank you for the honesty. I love "Red Dragon" and I watched the film adaptation several times. Yes, please force yourself, if you have to, to read good books, because one day, you'll thank yourself for this decision.

    I am looking for good books to read recently, it was quite a timing that our english teacher recommended her choice of books. "The Shack" at first was unappealing to me, I was not that aware of it's beauty until I read this review, it was like receiving a slap on my face for judging the book by it's title..nevertheless, i think this book will find its way to the many scarred and lost people, people who needs awakening and a tap on the shoulder by God. Moreover, Love is a powerful element for it can either move mountains or calm stormy seas, it is a wonderful feeling to love and to be loved, with these things present nowadays, we must get out from the thought of passivity and look forward for our awakening, to do what is right in God's eyes..to forgive, and you feel light as a feather.
    I am looking forward for this book. I hope I can get a copy, for it is a book you couldn't afford to miss.

    1. Marnelle, you're absolutely right about not judging a book by its title or cover. I'm also not the type who reads "religious" books, but this one is not about religion; it's about FAITH...knowing Who God really is and loving Him for it. W.P. Young is not a preacher, not even a religious person. He describes himself as a "spiritual" person. If you want, I can give you, Gelo, Steff, and Mark a PDF copy of The Shack.

  7. As a book junkie, I really appreciate and adore people who recommend books for me to read and talk about books we read. It is something that makes me smile... seeing them talking passionately about a book that they read is something really amazing to watch.
    I don't really read inspirational or spiritual books but there is one that moved me to tears while reading it. “Ripples of Joy” by Cheryl Kirking is one of the books that changed the way I see things. It is a compilation of different stories from different people who have gone through life-changing experiences that are simple, emotional and heart-breaking at times. Reading this book is like a way of quenching the thirst of your soul. Each story presents a lesson about love, courage and compassion. I love this book and not to mention the quotes that are incorporated at the end of every story. The story and quotes are just simply sublime. The weirdest thing is that I didn't buy this book for me but for a friend. I only read it because she thanked me for giving her the most wonderful book. I was curious and bought one for me. And I realized and understood what she meant. God truly works in mysterious ways.
    The Shack is definitely on my reading list. I will buy and read it after I finish "my reading challenge" for this year. I have read 21 books toward my goal of 30 books. Wish me luck!

  8. As I heard this book from one of your lessons in our Creative Writing class, I felt a tingling in my head that indicated I have encountered it in one of my book-hunting sessions whenever I had extra money. I somehow didn't notice "The Shack" by W.P. Young because other book titles lured me. Maybe it was because of the catchy titles and the gory imagery that fluctuated into my mind when I took a glance at those short blurbs or previews. I found myself being magnetized by literary pieces written by Thomas Harris and Stephen king because I was into that kind of reading. Putting aside "The Shack", I got engrossed by these books of brutality and macabre blood baths but upon hearing what "The Shack" has to offer to an audience, I badly want to get a hold of it. I think that the book will improve my belief and faith in God. Maybe if I read this book, I would not only limit myself into reading gruesome literature and instead look at the bright side of spirituality.

  9. When I was in high school I only read very few books and it depends if it is really interesting. Most books that really catches my attention are about love stories, real life experiences and miracles because after reading it I cannot move on and I do have a wonderful sleep afterwards. I am so thankful that our english teacher would suggest books and give us few information about that certain book. "The Shack" which is written by W.P. Young is not really a catchy title but by the way our teacher encourage us to read this and I heard their is a miracle that happened in the story.So last Sunday I went to the mall and while I am browsing for books to
    read I saw "The Shack" in the lowest part of the shelves and I immediately grabbed it and as of now I am starting to read it. I really want books about having faith with God because even though I don't read a bible still, in this kind of books I am always reminded of the existence of GOD in whatever trials we take.

  10. After reading the book review I was intrigued with what "The Shack" could give me. The chills I felt while reading the book review was the same feeling when I hear good music, it gave me a temporary high. If that was the effect of the book review, what would I feel when I am already reading it? If the book tells about God then it would be a great help for those sheep without a shepherd like me, it could restore my relationship with God. It may not have a catchy title, and I never ever even heard of this book before but maybe it could be worthwhile reading it.
